Beyond Good & Evil

From 1770 to 1899, a war was being fought. On one side was God and his soldiers, fighting for the survival of mankind. On the other was the Millennium Earl and the descendants of Noah, fighting for the destruction of mankind. As you may have guessed, God won and mankind was saved. We wouldn't be here if he hadn't. But while mankind was saved from annihilation at the hands of the Millennium Earl, it's difficult to say whether we really won this war. After all, both the descendants of Noah and God's soldiers- Exorcists they're called -destroyed each other in their last battle.
The war really ended in a tie.
The memories of Noah and Innocence, the two materials that make a Noah or an Exorcist, fled from their deceased masters and spread out around the globe where they hid for nearly 100 years, waiting for the chance to come back and defeat the other.
That chance happened in early 2007 when the Millennium Earl, after disappearing the same time the war ended, returned with his goal of finishing what he started nearly 300 years ago. He began by building up a new army of Akuma to seek out and destroy innocence fragments while they were still in an inactive state. Unfortunately, the very first Akuma he created ended up being destroyed by the very first activated innocence fragment and its compatible user, and thus started the new war.
So why hasn't any of this been mentioned in your history books or on the local news channel?
The Vatican is keeping things largely underwraps and have been doing a fair job of it for a long, long time. However, in the last war, getting information was not nearly as easy as it is today. Today, all you could ever want to know is at the tip of your fingers. That's the magic of technology.
Unfortunately, this has made the Vatican's job a lot harder than normal seeing as how people can communicate in much simpler and quicker ways. People are talking a lot about strange monsters disguised as normal humans and a mysterious organization of super powered "kids" clad in black uniforms. It's on the front page of newspapers and magazines, the hot topic on talk shows and dinner parties. What are these strange machine-like monsters, who are these mysterious fighters, and why is the United States suddenly closed off to the rest of the world?
People are curious, and those who try to feed their curiosity will find themselves targeted by either the Vatican or the Millennium Earl. One should hope it's the former of the two that gets to them first.
